66 GS hatchback

We are making progress on putting in the panels between the rear window and trunk. Found a very nice under panel and had it dipped and bought a top panel from Ames. Two problems with the Ames panel, missing about 2" of both upper trunk corners, had to cut off original and weld on. Lip where package tray fits under to long, you would not be able to get the package tray under it. Had to cut 1/4' off the entire length. The original had the 1/4' folded back. Used panel and aftermarket, fit together well and fit in car OK, installed and aligned trunk lid and then fit panels. Center of two new panels was about 1/4" high in the center when deck lid was aligned. Had to work both panels to get them down to the deck lid, and start to tack weld and check the fit every few welds. Looked good when done. Reason for replacing under panel was the hack job they did on the speaker holes and rust on the under panel center. Top panel was not to bad, getting them apart would have destroyed the panel, and using the new on made it easier. We counted 16 spot welds on
each sail panel holding the upper panel to them. Took a lot of time to drill all the spot welds. Had to make a tool to remove the tension rods. GM body book shows the how to make tool and it worked well. These rods can be finger pinchers with no tool.
