1965 GS Front Brake Drum is distorted
« on: November 19, 2015, 02:23:13 PM »
To all you 65 GS Experts,
Need some help, one of my Front Brake Drums is distorted (1965 GS).  Can someone tell me what other Buicks have the same "Front drum-hub Assembly"?  My parts book shows the #1377136 for 1964-66 Special-Skylark-GS (not Disk).  Example, would the front drum-hub from a 1964 Sport wagon or a 1967 Skylark be a suitable fit for my 65 GS (wife's car?  There is a bone yard I'm going to and see what they have?
thanks, I've gotten the best help from you Buick GS experts, Richard

Hi Richard,

I think any front drum/hub from 64 to 70 will work on your GS. The only difference I'm aware of is drum material and fin configuration. Some of the later 60s, 1970 had aluminum drums.

Dear Richard, Mark, and mid-60s Buick victims of having their legs pulled . . . . .

Need some help, one of my Front Brake Drums is distorted (1965 GS).

. . . Front Brake Drums (?) What are these front drum brakes of which you speak ???.

. . . .  :overthetop:

Rear drum brakes?  Yeah, my trusty wagon still has those, but if the fellers at Orinda Motors keep up their lobbying, they might not last much longer either! . . .

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:

Richard ,
Not sure what you mean by distorted ? is the drum bent where it mounts to the hub or is it just warped ?
Could it just be turned on a brake drum lathe ?
If you don,t find anything I might have a good used one . I,m putting disc brakes on mine .

John,
The hub appears to be ok but the drum is warped from trying to drive out a cross-threaded lug stud.

Ok I got ya now . I remember those well . Those studs were put in the hub first and then the drum was slid on AND then there was a process called swedging , where part of the stud shoulder was actually smashed down on top of the drum to hold the two together .
To get the stud out we would grind off that swedged part and then drive out the stud .
Let me know if you don,t find anything and I can pull mine off and see if they are any good ( as far as thickness goes ) If they are I can turn it and send it to you .

As Mark Ascher said, the drums from any of the 64 and newer Buick A-body cars will fit.  The only ones that will have the exact same appearance are the 64 and 65 drums though.  The fin configuration and shape of the outside of the drum changed in 66, but fit and function is the same though.

Brian, Mark, and John,
As usual, you GS experts again saved my neck, thanks for the info.  I'm headed up to a bone yard in Washington to see what they have.  John, thanks for the offer and I'll take you up on it if I can't find a decent drum.
                                                                                                                          again thanks, Richard
