Gray Interior Colors
« on: January 06, 2016, 08:01:51 AM »
With the white interior that I'll be installing in my restoration, I'll be using Charcoal gray carpet and gray dash, steering mast, steering wheel and dash pad.  Does anyone have paint specs for these parts of the car?  I see in http://65gs.com/board/index.php?topic=502.msg3482#msg3482 that Walt has a 65 Dupont paint chart.  Does it include the dash, etc.?  That would be a great start.  SEM vinyl dye color for the dashpad would also be appreciated!

Thanks,

Chuck

The Dupont color chart shows a #9002 Lt Gray semi gloss, and a #9174-LH Dark Gray semi gloss. The Dark Grey looks to be a fine metallic paint.
The light gray is closer to your typical grey primer shade, and the dark grey is closer to black.
The 'upper dash' is the thin strip of metal between the dash pad and windshield. it should be painted with a flat #9195-LH Dark Gray

A PPG chart is shown on the autocolorlibrary site. It lists interior colors but doesn't show examples.
It lists a Light Grey #32190 and a Dark Grey Poly #32471 in semi gloss.
A flat Dark Grey Poly is # 32452.

I don't think the 'Light gray' was used on the GS, but someone else can confirm.

Walt,

Have tried to get the local paint shop to mix up some of those colors and they told me the database was no longer available since the paint used was lacquer. Maybe someone else can confirm that.
The darker gray does have a fine metallic in it. The Poly in the description denotes metallic.
Here's a link to a different color database that shows 9002, 9195 and 9174

I've gotten a similar response from paint shops..... the old formulas are no longer valid since the various bases/tints were either discontinued or changed over the years.  Some say they can still mix to match them, but I don't know their method.

TCP Global (AutocolorLibrary) does sells paints for the old codes. Price for the dark grey poly varies from $60 to $90 a quart depending on whether you want enamel, lacquer or a urethane. Reducers and hardeners are extra cost! I believe they can put it in an aerosol can as well.... might be the best value for just a dash.

There are other suppliers of paints that supposedly match. APS/Tower is one name that sounds familiar:

I've had interior 'dyes' mixed up at paint shops. Unsure how the actual mix differs from an actual paint.

APS Tower Paint is local to me and is the shop that told me they couldn't mix it.

Thanks for the info guys!  I've just run into the same issue with my body base coat paint.  My painter has always used Dupont paint, but my Verde Green color is not available in urethane; only in lacquer.  Apparently, Dupont now owns Nason, or it's a sister brand to Dupont.  And Nason has a formula for Verde Green in urethane.  That's what we'll be testing soon.  I'll check with our local body shop supply house to see if they have the dash formulas available in Nason.  I let you know what I find.

Well, I have to correct myself. APS Tower Paint was able to make one of the colors after all. The Dark Gray Poly #32471 was the one they made for me and what was used on my dash. Its a lacquer paint. They are making one spray can with a 60% gloss for Chuck and will be mailing it to him.

Thanks Dan for hooking me up with APS Tower and the paint.  When the time comes, I'll report back on results.
