Flywheel Dust Shield
« on: June 04, 2009, 08:52:01 PM »
Has anyone seen these parts for sale anywhere?  My car does not have one.  The flywheel is in the open and visible.  The shield would bolt to the bellhousing, I believe.  This is for a Muncie 4-speed.

Thanks,

Chuck

Ahh yes , the elusive manual trans gravel shield. Seems a lot of cars must have it missing. At least half of the 4 speed cars I have seen didn't have it.
Could it have been an option?lol
I made one from the front of an automatic gravel shield.

Good luck,

Thanks Loren.  I assume the automatic gravel shields are readily available?  Probably repopped?

Of course not! It's never easy...
The correct shield is 65-66 GS only.
Brian tells us the next best thing is to find an earlier Dynaflow cover and bend/trim/weld to fit.
I'm in the process of modifying one now.

Chuck,

You'd stated that you had a Muncie?

Did someone replace your tranny at one time?

As Walt mentioned above, the 65 4 speed was a one year only deal and was a T-10.

The easiest way to check is to look on the bottom of the tranny housing and if it's the original deal, you should see what will look like the letters "GS" cast into the case.

As a Muncie, you'll probably have better luck locating a shield than you will locating on for the 65 GS T-10.

Actually the shield attaches to the bell  houseing , between the flywheel and the oil pan.
Tranny manufacturer doesn't factor in.
I can't readily recall the cover for a dynaflow. At one time I had an original from one of my GS's and made up two for a couple of friends that needed one.
I had used a cover  from a 64 or 65 turbo 400.

Chris,

Yes, Dave Knutsen replaced the factory installed automatic with the Muncie.  I believe he said he thought it was more bulletproof than the T-10.  He still has the automatic, but not the original engine.  I would buy them both to have the option to make the car "numbers matching" if the engine was also available.

Walt ,take it easy there .
My understanding about the T-10 is that there were two versions built. The ones used in the '65 AND '66 GS were of a heavier duty . This is something I picked up from my machine shop owner back in MN , who pointed out that the heavier duty version was sought out by racers.  I also vaguely remember something about parts differences.
Any more knowledgeable persons out there?

T-10 for 65-66 has more nickel content in the alloy that the gears are made of.If trans is original to car the vin will be stamped on the top flange of the case or top flange of the tailshaft. A KR will be stenciled on the right side of the case in yellow. The case and tailshaft will have the date code cast in the right side. On the boss behind the inspection cover , B for ( BorgWarner) year, month will be stamped and should  match ( or be before) the build date on the firewall tag!On some early trans the tailshaft is cast iron not aluminium
and will have gs cast into it!The flywheel cover is hard to find but the bracket and the switch for back up lights are even more challenging! Jon

Wow, I never heard of the cast iron tail! I do have a date code of 12-15-64 on one of my aluminum tailshafts.
Back-up switch....I have seen repos for $55. Haven't verified if they are exactly correct. pontiac suppliers usually have them.

I have good photo records of the real GS dust shield and a cover from a 401 Dynaflow that is very close and will fit with minor mods.  If anyone wants them please let me know.
