where did my steering wheel come from??

Hi all,

Can anyone peg where my steering wheel came from? I've never seen any other skylark with one. The center cap insignia also doesn't look correct, but overall I like the look. It may also be mounted upside down. Is there any chance this was an option? Don't see it on the build sheet. Thanks for any help, and all the help on my long road to restoring correctness.

Looks like one from a 65 Oldsmobile F85/Cutlas/442 with a horn button from a early 70's Buick batwing std wheel

Most all of the steering wheels for the '64, '65 and '66s are cracked. If there is an NOS one out there, it will not be cheap. Your best bet is to buy a reproduction steering wheel from Frank McIntyre. I think they are about $285 already painted. Of course you will need to find a horn bar for it.

Gulp!    The steering wheel on my trusty wagon was also cracked and the horn bar was completely pitted.  When I looked at my choices I decided it was time to settle for an authentic look and stop there.  Here is the before:

It is a Grant steering wheel with a leather wrap and a horn button from of all things a 1960 Invicta.  It won't fool any judge, but it does look suitably Buick. 

I sure feel sorry for you guys trying to keep things all original.  Is there any interest in trying to get a reproduction batch of the hood bars?  If there was, I might go back to the OEM look!

I wish I could say I planned it like that.  As it turns out I purchased the Invicta Tri-Shield emblem only, but the fellow gave me the entire button including the chrome exterior.  When I started to assemble the wheel, I realized I could easily mount the Invicta button on top of the generic Grants button and as they say . . . the rest is history.

All it needs is a helmet on the seat.  That is a hot rod interior!

What my trusty wagon really need is a working engine and a nice vintage Airstream travel trailer to pull!

TA-Performance is putting the finishing touches on the engine, so that should be resolved soon . . . .

As to the trailer . . . . hmm . . . that's a whole new project in itself!
