Year of Manufacture License Plates - MN
« on: May 05, 2015, 09:28:55 PM »
Had several discussions this past weekend about year of manufacture plates in MN. This is posted currently on the DMV website:

"Original Minnesota plates for any collector vehicle OR vehicle 20 years old or older. Original MN plates must: Be actual MN license plates that you have purchased privately. Match the year your vehicle was made; EITHER the license plate year or validation sticker year can match. Have an original license plate number."

Also check out this link:

Two of our members here told me that the MN DMV location they visited would not issue YOM plates for them. My experience getting YOM plates registered & title changed to my 69 Bel Air 3 years ago tells me that the location you visit and the knowledge of the public employees at that location can will determine your success. Call first and shop around. Of the two I visited, Inver Grove Heights was useless; Rosemount DMV knew exactly what to do.

Mark

Very good information to have.

Thanks!

You have answered several questions I have wondered about for some time but hadn't taken the time to check.

I still have questions about

Single License plate

Under Collector Classes and Requirements there is a price listed for single and double plates.

I know my 1954 Buick I sold in 2011 had a single plate on the back and nothing on the front.

What are the rules on using a single plate?

Under Original Minnesota Plates it says "Plates made for novelty or collector purposes are not allowed to be displayed on the vehicle while it is operating on streets and highways".

Collector Plates

What does it really mean when they say "Vehicles registered in any of the collector classes are restricted to operation solely as collector item"?

Thanks again

The intent of collector car plates is for hobby use of the vehicle.  A vehicle with collector plates is not suppose to be used for every day transportation.

Same in Michigan.  Supposed to only use the car for parades and car shows.  I've never been stopped (and never used the GS for a daily driver), but if I ever am, I will be out test driving and tuning!  Can't keep a classic without frequently tuning it!

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it......

Cheers!
