repro kick panels w/ carpet
« on: February 09, 2015, 08:50:08 PM »
Hi all,

Wondering if anyone has used Legendary's kick panel repros and how they liked their fit/finish? Is there a better source? Related, for Midnight Aqua/White color combo, what's the correct color carpet? I'm thinking black is likely but don't know. Thanks much.

Is that a Midnight Aqua exterior with a white interior ? If so, white interiors use gray as the other color - dash, dash pad, carpet, etc.

Elvin,

You can get reproduction kick panels from most aftermarket suppliers like Year One, The Parts Place, etc. They usually come in black only so you would need to paint or dye to match your interior. Note that there are two versions available depending upon whether you have AC or not. I would almost imagine that suppliers get their kick panels from the same manufacturer. I just ordered a pair from Ames Performance as their prices were the best at $69 for an AC set. I'm hoping that Pontiac and Buick kick panels are the same. I'll know for sure on Friday when they are supposed to arrive.

Thanks guys. The car is a color change, done nicely, but a color change nonetheless. Original combo was cream with saddle interior. Pics I've seen of mdnt blue/white (convertible btw) have been lacking in detail for carpet color, it just looks dark. Can you confirm that white seats only came with grey carpet? I'd like to get it correct but since it's not matching it's chassis plate codes perhaps it doesn't matter.

The kickpanels I have are carpeted. Legendary offers carpet add ons for their kickpanels, but I am guessing I have to glue them on. Wondering if anyone makes them already done. Related to other part of the inquiry, what would be the correct color kickpanel? Thanks.

Yeah, white seats came with grey. Carpet on kick panels and lower portion of door panels should match. Kick panel plastic was also grey. If you know a reasonably good upholstery shop they can attach the kick panel carpet with staples. That is how the factory did it. If ordering new grey carpet look for the extra carpet option and use that for the door panels.

Thanks Dan. Just looked up another white interior resto and see what you mean.

The white interior on my convertible has never been re-done and is in pretty good shape, so if anybody needs any pictures, let me know and I'd be happy to help.

Hi Keith,

That would be very helpful. My car was color changed by prior owner and he apparently loved blue so much he did the whole interior, excepting seats. Dan pointed to the grey, I've got to do dashpad, dash, carpet, door lowers and kickpanels so pics will save some guesswork. I found a rotisserie resto that sold with good pics so I see the dashpad and dash color, but I need carpet and kickpanel carpet pics. I have a no A/C model. Thanks.

Elvin - my car does have A/C, so hope that doesn't mess things up for you too badly.  Over the weekend, I'll get some shots of the carpet and kickpanel carpet.  The original color is still good under the carpet saver mats, and it is dark gray, almost black.

Keith,

I think it will still help. Mainly want to see the way the carpet is finished/attached on the kickpanels. Legendary sells carpet panels for the kicks, but old OEM I've seen shows a vinyl edge trim. What I have now has no trim. Don't know which is correct.

Assuming I get home tonight before it gets dark, I'll get some pictures and send them out tomorrow.

Here is a photo of the kick panels that I'm currently working on. This is the original panel from the driver's side. The passenger side panel on non AC cars would look the same only a mirror image. Yes, there is vinyl edging sewn to the front edge and around the oval cut in the center. I bought a new molded carpet set and extra carpet material for the kick panels and door panel. I removed the old kick panel carpet and used it as a template to cut a new piece. I plan to take it to an auto upholstery shop and have them sew on that vinyl edging. The originals were stapled to the panel, but glue would work too. I also seared all the raw edges of the carpet with a lighter to keep it from unraveling and "fuzzing".

If you plan to go with the white/gray factory color interior, the carpet color you will need is called charcoal and is a good match to original. The kick panel plastic can be dyed with vinyl dye from SEM Color Coat Graphic #15303.

Here is a picture of my driver's side kick panel.  The carpet appears to be glued to the plastic panel.  It only has a stitch at the rear of the panel (closest to the door), and that stitch appears to be mainly decorative, or to keep the edge of the carpet from fraying.  It doesn't seem to be holding the carpet onto the plastic panel in any way.

Hope this helps....

I've seen the kick panel carpet attached both ways, that is glued or stapled.
Keith, you are correct,  the stitching does not attach the carpet to the plastic kick panel.
