NOS rocker molding for 65?
« on: September 28, 2014, 07:21:13 PM »
I found someone with an NOS rocker molding for '65 Skylark.  I haven't seen the molding, nor pictures of it yet, but the person who is selling indicated it has a very slight flair where it meets the rear of the front wheel well.  I have not seen one with this flair, only straight moldings.  He seems to think some of the NOS ones have this fliar, and some don't.  He is a knowledgeable 64-67 Skylark and GTO person.  All the moldings I have seen are straight, though I have never seen an NOS one.  Have any of you seen an NOS replacement with a very slight 'flair' at the front wheel well?

The molding is in the original packaging, so I can check to see if its got the right numbers on it.  Figured I'd check in with you all first before driving out to see and purchase this molding.  Steve

Steve,

There should be no "flair" to the moulding. I assume by your description, it's a bend.
They should be straight. Just because it's in GM packaging, doesn't mean it can't be
damaged. But, maybe it's not bad enough where it could be used... you'd have to see
it first. Good luck!

Rocker panel moldings for 1965 Special, Skylark and Skylark GS should be the same. Group 8.304 part # 1365444 right side and part # 1365445 left side. NOS rocker panel moldings are hard to find. Good luck, hope they are the correct ones.

The moldings should be as straight as an arrow. If there is a bend at the front fender area, it may be that it was mounted on a car which did not have the front fender shimmed properly at the dog leg. I see this all the time at car shows. It's an art to hang and shim the front fenders correctly.

Take note

I think the station wagon ones are a little longer but look the same.

Perhaps our station wagon experts could verify this for us.

Thanks for all the replies.

I picked up the molding this morning and probably paid too much for it...  But it is NOS and the molding looks real nice.  He had a used molding to compare it to - its identical except for the curve.  I think someone must have put a slight bend in it to make installation easier.  I don't see any marks near the bend.  I hope I can straighten it without damaging it.  I'll post a picture sometime over next few days.  Steve

A few pictures of the molding are attached.  The curve is not bad at all and its only near the very corner of it.  I believe I could get away with it as it.  But, since I can't leave well enough alone... I will be taking it to someone that works on straightening and buffing moldings and get his opinion.

Looks really sweet.

Now an even more difficult task, find the other side NOS.

Good luck!

Thats like finding a needle in a haystack!  Let me know if you did not buy it as I'd be interested in it.  Steve
