Got a quote for rechroming
« on: April 26, 2008, 06:31:29 PM »
These aren't my parts, but I spotted some '65 GS cores at the Limbrandi's Chrome Plating space at the Carlisle swap meet. I inquired what the cost was to have the parts rechromed....
Grille: $450
Headlight doors: $175 each
Rocker moldings (yes, they're being chromed!): $150 each
Rear bumper: $750.

The parts were in good condition, with no major pitting. The original chrome had the speckled, cracked, faded look to it. Any pits in the parts would require additional labor costs to repair.
Turnaround time is approx 12 weeks.
They're located in central Pa.

Thanks for posting these Walt.

On a related note.. has anyone ever dealt with Keystone for bumper replating?

The reason I ask is that I used them this last time for a front bumper and although it came about 6  months ago, I just opened it the other day to get it ready for my convertible and all I can say is WOW!

These guys have to be the best bumper rechromers in the world.  It has a lifetime warrenty and I think that bumpers are all they do now.

The chrome is very very deep and the back of the part is finished very nicey so that it will hold up for a very long time.

Just some FYI in case anyone was looking for a bumper rechromer

Oh yeah... $450 for the front + exchange

Chris,
I've heard good things about Keystone. I had my bumpers done by Northstar here in MN years ago, I think they became part of Keystone.

Walt,
Those prices seem pretty fair to me, except the bumper. $750 - yikes.
I've been looking for a 65 Skylark front bumper core, and haven't seen
anything. I can't believe how hard it is to find 65 fronts.

I also have a 66 bumper done b Northstar years ago. It's absolutely beautiful. ;D

My 65 project came with a pair done by the Bumper Boys. While the outside looks nice, looking at the back side revealed repairwork that was poorly done... Holes were sloppily welded, and another area was patched.

Tri-city Plating in Tenn is another good bumper chromer. They visit some of the larger swap meets on the East coast. Price was around $450 last time I checked.

Tom,

No, Northstar is a commercial outfit. Robert is one man business (maybe two, I don't know if his dad is still involved) and he is a craftsman. Robert does all the hand/prep work, but has the actual plating done outside. He also does a lot of stainless and some aluminum trim restoration. He really knows 65 GS cars, he's done trim restoration on a number of them.

How did your horn bar turn out?

Mark,

Can you pass on the info for your Stainless / Alum. guy?

I need my set of wheel arch and rocker moldings redone.

Any idea on prices?

Thanks,

Chris

Chris,

I don't remember what he charged me per piece. Condition is also a factor.
Seems to me the wheel opening mouldings were $30-$40 ea.

The rocker mouldings are tougher. Condition will determine what he charges on those.
Find the best set you can, and that ain't easy!

Thanks Mark...

It just so happens that my newest treasure from Cali (65 post) has some very nice rocker moldings.

With some TLC they should turn out really nice!

I'll give him a call either tomorrow or later this week.

Thanks!

Mark, the horn bar turned out great. I have three wood wheels that are all in very good shape.I have horn bars for all of them and was going to get the other two bars done to go with the wheels.I think his prices are very reasonable.   Tom

Hi Al,

Unfortunately my moldings will require some metal finishing to remove years of stone and bad driver dings.

I have a wheel and typically don't mind investing the little bit of elbow grease to make the ole brightwork shine again however I know my limits when it comes to removing the dings.

Welcome aboard   ;D
