Hi,

I'm running a centerpiece dual friction with a stock throw out bearing no real complaints.

Note in case you weren't aware the throw out bearing is unique so yo cant get a new assembly with a clutch kit the bearing is available from rock auto just you have to reuse the bearing holder.

I have a Centerforce in my 300 V8 '66 Special and really like it.
The street/strip Zoom setup in my red 66 needs too much pedal effort and I'm concerned it's going to eventually damage my linkage....it's going to be replaced.

A couple of guys here use the setup from Luk. Luk makes clutch/pressure plates for several other sellers under different brand names. Good unit at a good price. It's on my shopping list.

Walt, do you know the part number for the Luk, for a 65/6 Skylark GS 40? I found and bought a Luk for my 67 GS 400, not sure the same, thanks.

That's it! Luk lists it as 04-049. Fits many GM cars with 11" clutch including 65-73 GS.
I'm seeing it for about $95 with shipping.

I've found that if you demand/abuse the Luk set-ups they have a tendency to start slipping prematurely. I have not had good luck with them. Now the Center Force Dual Friction in my book is an excellent replacement. Why have to do it over again in a yr. or two when for a little extra $$$ you'll be done with it. It has a stock feeling, maybe even softer than stock feeling & it's not likely to start slipping prematurely.

The LuK setup I purchased has been sent back.  The clutch disc will not work. 

The old clutch is flat on flywheel side with the hub protruding toward the pressure plate.  The LuK disc has the hub protruding toward the flywheel.  Possibly the wrong disc was included?  Due to the orientation of the hub, the disc will ride at the very end of the input shaft and would not be fully supported.

Again, it is very possible that there was a packaging mishap.

Old clutch vs new clutch.  Any ideas where I can find one that is flat on the flywheel side and with the hub protruding toward the pressure plate?

The new one is the LuK 04-049.

The trans is the 3 speed toploader.  Dearborn, Ford, Toploader; whatever you want to call it.  It has Ford casting numbers on it and the cover is on top.

Is it possible that the splined input shaft does not extend as far toward the engine on a 3 speed as the 4 speeds?

I have a '65 Manual that covers the big cars (i.e. Wildcats, Rivs).  It displays two clutch assembly diagrams.  One for the 4500 series and one for the 4600 series.  The diagrams depict different clutch discs. 

To further complicate matters, the engine is a '63 with a '65 flywheel which was machined to fit the '63 crank.  The '63 crank necessitated a pilot bushing adapter from Russ Martin to properly align the trans.  I did not identify the crank as a '63 on my own, Russ did.  Confused?  I sure as hell am.

If the new clutch is installed, the input shaft would not slide all the way through the hub on the disc and would not be fully supported.

Any ideas or insight?

Any other thoughts on what clutch set-up to use? I also have the same issues! With the 3speed post car that I'm working on? My 4speed car has, The older center force style! What are you other guys running in your stick cars? Thanks for the help! I would prefer something less stiff as original style in my 4speed car was a bear to ingauge

Looks to me like they possibly assembled the clutch disc hub backwards at the factory.
Send it back and order a centerforce clutch for it.  Get the Centerforce II.    Pressure plate is part number CFT165552 and disc is part number CFT383735.  I have put this clutch in multiple 65 GS cars and they work perfectly.   You will not be disappointed.  You can get it from Summit Racing.

Throwout bearing is unique to the Nailheads and not available through the normal channels.  If you have the original throwout bearing assembly, the bearing can be pressed off the collar and replaced.  The part number for the bearing itself has been discussed multiple times on this site before, so if you do a search, you should be able to find it easily.
