'66GS engine
« on: April 18, 2013, 08:04:48 PM »
I am putting together a '66GS engine that was in pieces, the perverbial basket case.  Two questions. Where do the studs for the fuel line support & clips with the holes in them that hold the fuel line for the fuel pump go on the oil pan?? Anyone have a picture or two as to orentation??? Next, is the fuel filter held by a bracket on the thermostat housing like on the Full Size cars & a picture or two of the orentation of where the fuel line is supposed to go??? I am almost ready to start the engine to make sure all is OK & run it for the customer with exhaust on, to be quiet, so the customer also knows that everything is OK icluding oil pressure, water temp. etc.
All he will have to do is install the engine. The carb., timing & all will be done so it will be just a plug & play with little or NO questions or ISSUES.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or recomendations.

Hi Tom,

If I'm not mistaken, I think the '66 GS's fuel line routes the same as the '65 GS. In the Electronic Garage section, Gran Sport Service Manual, on page 49, figure 3-3 is an illustration that should help. If this is not correct for the '66 GS, I'm sure Walt will have the answer.

Fuel filter mounting is different on a '66 GS. It mounts down by the fuel pump, right in front of the fuel bowl/diaphragm portion. The bracket attaches to a timing cover stud. I'll try to get a better pic later, but here's one I had on file:

I told you that Walt is the "go to guy" with '66 GS questions. And I thought the location of the '65 fuel filter was close to the fan belts. That's a tight fit! Walt, does the '66 have the same loop clips that attach to the front of the oil pan?

The '66 bracket is pn 1376363, group 3.203. It's used on '400-401-425' engines..... Buick called the 401 GS engine a '400' to make upper management happy. :tongue3:
Oddly, the later '72 parts book says it fits 66-67 400's.

John, I'm seeing the same pn for the 'fuel line clips' that attach at the oil pan bolts, pn 1373096 is listed for 65-66 400 engine in the '66 Parts book.

Tom, I see Russ has the '66 brackets on his site. Take a look:
http://nailheadbuick.com/intake

BTW, any of you not familiar with Russ Martin should check out his Nailhead site! Both he and his brother Brian are or were 65 GS owners.

Here is Russ's pic of the 65 vs 66 fuel filter brackets:

Thank you VERY much Walt & John. That now explains the timing case cover bolt with the stud on it. It was the only bolt that fit in that one spot on the timing case cover. It's to hold the fuel filter bracket. And, the picture of the fuel line clips on the oil pan. The one's I was supplied with had studs in them & there was NO way the fuel line hose would go through the holes in the clips without rubbbing on the hose. Now I know that the clips are held in place with regular oil pan bolts. Now I can continue on with the other minor problems of fitting 3/8ths. hose outlets on the fuel pump up to the carb. as it's an Edelbrock replacement with a 3/8ths. inlet.
Thank's to ALL once again.

Does it matter if it is mounted above or below on a 66?

Another source for the 66 400/401 fuel filter bracket is a 64-65 300 engine. They use that same fuel filter bracket that is in the picture Walt posted.
