« on: August 21, 2007, 11:35:15 AM »
Hi all,

Can you tell me if a the frame of a 64 Special Convertible will work for a 65 GS.

Thank you,

As far as I know, 64 and 65 frames are the same. 1966 had a slightly different front crossmember, and 1967 had a different rear crossmember since different rear springs were used.

I have found that the front crossmember difference is not a year thing, but more where the car/frame was manufactured.  Some have the tie down point right under the engine, some don't.  I have seen 65 and 66 cars both with and without the tie-down on them.  I parted out a '66 4dr HT that had the tie down, and parted out a '66 2dr. HT that didn't have it.  2dr and 4 dr frames were the same.

There will be a difference between the 64 special trans crossmember and the 65 GS trans crossmember..... also in the way the crossmember mounts to the rail of the frame on each side......

From what I've seen, the rear cross member on the GS convertible frame has an extra brace on either side.  This actually appears to be a GS convertible feature since we don't see them on the GS coupe or post frames or the Skylark / Special convertible frames that are also boxed.

My understanding is that the braces are back there for the extra support needed to handle the massive torque and lack of roof support in the GS convertible.

The GS, Olds 442 and GTO frames in 65 supposedly all came from the same suppliers and all these frame are all virtually the same if you are looking for an exact replacement.
