Reverse Light Switch???
« on: February 09, 2013, 05:36:42 PM »
Does anyone know what this part is and what it's worth?

I think it's reverse light switch for a four speed and it's pretty hard to come by.

The part is NOS.

Thanks,

Chris

It's been a long time since I've been under a dash,I could be wrong, but it looks like a neutral safety switch for a column shift automatic car.
Got a part #?

Hi Loren... no part numbers on it.  I was going through some stuff to list on EBay and I came across it.  I vaguely remember it being in a box with some NOS Backup Lens brackets.

Chris,
I can look tomorrow, I have a Skylark that is an automatic column shift.
I am pretty sure it is a neutral safety switch, though.

Thanks Mark.

This is a pretty hard to find piece isn't it?

Any idea on the value of it and is anyone out there interested in buying it?

Thanks,

Chris

I don't think so Mark. At least not 65-66 GS.

EDIT:  Sorry Mark, I mistook your statement to say the pictured switch is  a 'back up light for a manual trans car'.

Good thing we weren't taking bets, it is not a neutral safety switch for a '65.
Got back to the Skylark and looked. Switch for an automatic has 4 male contacts. Two are for the neutral safety switch and the other two are for reverse lights.
But, a 3 spd manual, column shift car has a two prong switch that attaches on the column.
This can be seen in the '65 chassis manual, wiring diagrams section, page 10-92. Better picture of it on page 10-47 figure10-50.
As for the 4 spd switch, there is a picture of it's mounting on the transmission side cover . That is also page 10-47, figure 10-51

Walt, not to hijack the thread, but the manual 3 & 4 speed floor shifted cars had the back up light switch mounted on a bracket that bolts to the lower rear two bolts on the trans side cover. There is a small rod, similar to one for a carb choke, that attaches to the switch and the reverse lever on the trans. There are slotted holes on the switch to adjust the on-off of the rev. lights.

This is for 65, not sure at all about 66. Thinking about it now, I don't think this is the right configuration for the three speed manual transmissions, just 4 speed. Sorry for the confusion...

Mark,

the 3 speed is actually the similar if not the same to the picture you have shown, the 3 speed car I got from WI had it on there, when the weater breaks I will try to post a picture or 2

The switch that this thread was started about is for a 3-speed on the column manual transmission.  Bought it years ago thinking I would put backup lights on the '65 special I sold to JMOS, but ended up converting it to a 4-speed, so I sold the switch with the column and other 3-on-the-tree parts to a guy in CA.
