GS or not GS
« on: December 30, 2012, 06:27:32 PM »
Hey there fellow GS members.
I bought a -65 Skylark a year back down in Kingwood, TX, nice car but with a -70 455 and TH400 that had some issues.
After taking the motor out for rebuild (2 cracked pistons) I took a deepr look at the car.
The car have all exterior GS attribute (emblems, front fender moldings), also it has the reinforced (convertible) frame and heavier
than my -65 skylark rear springs and front swaybar and a 10-bolt posi with what seems to be 3.23:1 gears.
Interior wise it has black vinyl bucket seats with a full console (all bracket on the floor for the console is there).
I attached a pic of the VIN tag, and for me it really looks like a GS...
Anyone that can shine some light on this issue?
BR Anton and thx in advance.

(All the good parts is at the moment in my -65 Skylark incl. the 455 with alu heads and intake for som quick cruising....)

From your description and the cowl tag, I'd say you are correct.
It was originally  Burgundy Mist with a black bucket interior.

I'll second that and say that from the cowl tag this was a real GS at one time.

I have a really nice spare 1965 GS 401 sitting here if you are looking to bring this car back up to factory spec's.

PM me if you or anyone else is interested.

Chris,
That looks to be a fresh engine.

I bought it about five years ago from a fellow that was rebuilding a four speed 65 and ended up parting the car out.  The engine has been totally gone through according to the previous owner and it was in too good of condition to justify a complete rebuild.  There are many new parts and everything else is cleaned up and repainted.  No motor mounts but it does include the correct oil pan and exhaust manifolds.  I still have a set of NOS quarter panels (four door but can be trimmed down for a two door car) that I'll be getting more serious about selling also.  When I say NOS, I mean that that they are real "New Old Stock" quarters that have never been on a car.  :icon_thumright:

Another fun little detail is a plack placed on the instrumental panel telling who
GM build the car for.
If it is an after fabrication or not I do not know, but it could be fun to investigate.

I have never seen one of those except in a Riviera.
Looks like it warants some further investigation, You may have something somewhat special.
