Heater Core, 1966 No AC
« on: August 09, 2012, 07:59:48 AM »
I'm seeing conflicting info online as to replacement heater cores.  This is for a 66 Skylark with 340 and no AC, but should be same for all 64-67 including GS if no AC.   I posted the question on v8buick and only response was from someone with AC who said his original core was a 9040.

Anyway, here are pix of the 9040 and 9064 that are both listed as fittting.   Anyone know for sure which is as original?

That is a easy one!  The 9064 has the skewed pipes on it and is intended for the cars with factory AC on them.  The space is limited in that area of the car due to the larger box on the outside of the firewall with AC cars.  The skewed pipes route the heater hoses so they don't interfere with the box or the engine.  The other heater core (9040) with the straight pipes on it is for the non-AC cars.
Where it gets confusing is the 9064 will fit and work fine in a non-AC car, but the 9040 will not work well in a car with factory AC car.
So bottom line, either one will work in your non-AC car, but the correct one is the 9040.

Thank you Brian!

One other question---is the molded heater hose that goes from the back of the block to the heater core still available aftermarket?

I am not familiar with the 340 engines--my cars have the 300 engine, so I don't know about the hose.  On the 300, both heater hose connections are at the front of the engine--one on the water pump, and the other on the front pass side of the intake just behind the thermostat housing.  If a 340 goes to the rear of the engine, then it sound like a short hose and you should be able to match up something close looking at the hoses they have hanging in the back at your local parts store.
