Jay Leno's First Car
« on: June 10, 2012, 06:22:53 PM »
This past weekend I took the GS to the All-GM Show in Van Nuys California.  As usual, Jay Leno showed up for a while.  He was very interested in our car, and told my son and I that his very first car was a 65 GranSport, a 4spd coupe, in Burgundy Mist (same color as our car).  He was very knowledgeable about early GranSports and took quite a while looking over our car.  He graciously posed for a picture with my son, which I've attached.  Was kind of cool.

Keith

Another historical piece of 65 GS trivia comes to light in the pages of 65GS.com.

Congratulations on the opportunity to share it with us.

Your son sure looks excited.

Hey Keith,

I bet that when you bought your convertible six years ago, you'd never believe that it would lead to you rubbing elbows with the rich and famous. Way too cool. There is no one else like Jay Leno, a genuine class act. A great memory that you and your son will never forget.

Maybe I should send him an invite to the cookout at my house at the end of the month!
Did you find out if Jay currently owns a 65GS?

I asked him, and he said he does not.  But, you should send him an invite anyway!!

Yes, my son was excited to meet him.  My son is a big fan of the TV car show "Top Gear" (don't know if you can read his shirt, it says "I am the Stig"), and Jay noticed that.  Jay has been on that show, and my son asked him when he was going back on to drive the new "Reasonably Priced Car".   :laughing7:

When i was looking at that rough 3spd convertible in Iowa, I was told that Jay Leno's buyer had been around to look at the car also.  Can't say whether that was true or not, but it seems to make sense.

Very cool! Jay Leno is a true car guy! I have a article from the chicago sun-times
auto times dated april 24,1995 where Jay talks about his collection and the writer
asks Jay what his first new car was? To which Jay replies " A 1965 Buick Gran Sport with a 401 V-8 and a 4spd trans!" He also goes on to say that he was the only kid in high school with a new Buick! which he worked after school and saved
up for! Jon

Too bad Jay is on the west coast--I would be glad to let him take my '65 GS 4spd hardtop for a test drive!

It's funny, because everything I've ever read on the Internet about Jay's car collection states that his first car was a 50's (can't remember the exact year) Skylark, not a GS.  My guess is that car is his first car in his collection, not the car he had in high school.
