65 GS Trunk Paint
« on: March 26, 2012, 08:58:54 PM »
The attached pic is from my 65 GS (KAN) and I see gray with white/brown spatter. I can find gray with white spatter from various sites and gray with white/black from TCPglobal. Does anyone else have this same original color and for those that have restored this area what are some of the colors used and from where?

Hi Dwaine,

My convertible was also built in Kansas. The closest that I could find to match the original was made by Plasti-kote. It comes in a rattle can that can be bought at most auto parts stores. It's gray with white speckles. It does have to be top coated with clear to protect it. The clear top coat is also from Plasti-kote.

Zolatone was a major supplier of splatter paint, although I don't know if GM sourced their paint from them. It's pretty durable stuff, often used on boats and RV's back in the day.
Take a look at their webpage and maybe you'll find something closer to your original. They may even be able to custom make a color for you.

I bought a quart of their 20-72 silver/gray for my Baltimore-built '66 GS, but have yet to spray it....

Have not seen the paints that John or Walt are mentioning but I have used the GM Reconditioning Paint #1051498. Its a gray / white and looks good. Bought mine from The Parts Place. http://www.thepartsplaceinc.com Its $12 for a 14 oz spray can. Needs a clear coat over the top also.

Hey Walt,

The Medusa Gray looks like a closer match than what I used. Do you know if it can be rolled or brushed on? I don't have paint sprayer equipment in order to do it myself.

Dan, can you spray a swatch and post a photo?

Thanks,
John

It needs to be sprayed. The paint contains capsules which break open to give the splatter finish.
I did see this spray kit for under $25. No idea if it works well or not.

Try a Google search. I found one hit saying an electric sprayer works.

John,

My painter has the spray cans I bought. I will take a picture of the portion he painted for a test but it will be a while.
I will say it looked like a close match to what was in the trunk and what is in the trunk of Campfamily's convertible.

Thanks for the comments. Think I'll give that spray kit a go. Also believe the Desert Camo (20-80) is the closest I've seen.

You could try calling tech support at Zolatoneaim for advise on color choice or application.
Their instructions recommend a large tip spray gun. Spray the first coat with high pressure to make a nice base, then lower pressure for the splatter effect.
A base coat of generic brown/tan paint will help coverage and minimize the amount of splatter paint you need to use. Just use a paint chemistry that is compatible.
