Joe,

Couple of stupid questions:
Is your car a Fremont car - "Z" in the VIN.
Do you know how the brake backing plates were finished when you took it apart?
I'm wondering if they were painted, plated, etc.

Don't paint the front lower control arms until the bushings and ball joints are in. Don't paint any of the rear arms until the bushings are in.

Thanks Mark, the bushings will be in and taped off when I paint it. I didn't check out the imparticulars yet on the tag. My neighboe took them down and was supposed to look everything up. I will have to remind him.

The plates were to dirty and didn't think to check the finish. What do you think it is?

Joe,

Post the tag info when you get a chance. Just curious.

There isn't 100% perfect info known on the backing plates. The fronts on mine were definitely never painted. They were either cad or zinc plated. The rear backing plates were definitely painted black. I've heard some rears were just plated too. No big deal, I just thought if you had a Fremont car there would be some evidence. Check that stuff out as your taking the car apart! It takes a little extra time, but worth it to a few of us who want to know how they did things at the plants or suppliers.

Mark, I just took the front end apart on my other Fremont-built '66 GS.
This car was built in Jan '66. I'm seeing some differences from the March '66 Fremont built car. The March car didn't have any traces of paint on the spindles or backing plates,  but the January car has a nice layer of black paint on them.
Backing plates on the March car did not look plated at all...I did find shiny bare metal under bolt heads and gasket surfaces....no plating.
It's possible there are variations at the same assembly plant.

Also, My Baltimore-built 65 and 66's have floor-pan undercoating, but the Fremont '66's have none....

Walt,

I've seen or been told of a number of variations in the backing plate finishes. I'm not sure if they were just supplier variations, or parts spec changes. My Fremont car had no floor pan undercoating either. Just in the rear wheelhouses and behind them on the underside of the quarters outside the frame.

I'll post some pics of the front backing plates from mine this week.

Just thought i'd do an update. As of today, the frame is done and complete less the fuel and brake lines. I figured i'd wait until I dsrop the body on the frame so I don't pinch any on them.

Now I an at the mercy of my paint guy, who only does it part time now. So he will first take 2 parts that aren't attached to the body. Being, 2 fender wells, 2 fenders, 2 doors, 1 hood and deck lid, and 1 core support. He is going to take 2 at a time, get them all in etching primer until he's done with all the externals. Then onto the body.

During all of this, I have to clean and paint the trans, and go through the engine. In which i'm not sure what i'm going to do with.

I'll post some pics.

Joe ,

Haveing been down this route a few times allready, I would suggest putting the main lines in before you put the body back down. It is much easier to get them in without the body on.

Loren
Title: Re: My 65 GS Restoration Thread
Post by: Mark Ascher on January 17, 2009, 02:10:47 PM
Joe,

Ditto what Loren said. You'll never get the lines on with the body on, at least not cleanly.
The fuel line will be the most difficult, because it needs to snake through the frame at the front and the front crossmember.

Inline Tube bent mine to match the originals, so call them, they should be a perfect fit.

Mark
Title: Re: My 65 GS Restoration Thread
Post by: WkillGS on January 17, 2009, 04:30:38 PM
Make that three! Install lines before you drop the body.
Even the original lines fit poorly. The repos I got from The Right Stuff were pretty good, but the fuel line was too short. I had to send them my original so they could make one to copy. Their customer service was excellent, they went out of their way to make it right!

I should mention I did change my plan for that car and decided to go 99.9% original. So I took the stainless lines off, and bent my own from a roll of brake line I bought from NAPA. Looks factory stock now! ;D

Title: Re: My 65 GS Restoration Thread

You guys have it made. When I did mine , no one made lines available. I made my own also using NAPA tubing and fittings . Along with a quality bender  and flaring set . It ws kinda fun.

I will install the lines next. No big deal. I will be using the Right stuff stainless because I allready have them. Now as far as the fuel lines are concerned, I guess i'll use them for the stainless fuel line as well.

Loren, Mark, Walt and Chris. If you guys have another better source for new stainless fuel lines, then let me know.

As always I appreciate all the valuable and needed advice.

Hey Joe, I really like watching your progress. The tent is a testament to your dedication to your Buick project.

The last '65 GS I did was for Rod Johnson back in MN. That was maybe a ten years ago or so. It went to the GSCA nats that were in Ohio not too long after being finished. Can't remember the year.

So I'm looking for the new sources also.

Don't forget to drive this thing when it's done.

Post by: Joe65SkylarkGS on January 18, 2009, 09:49:59 PM
Oh yea, the tent. Turns out I had to take it down. I only needed it to disassemble and restore my frame. So the frame is done and now it's down. The body is on the rotissirie in my driveway wrapped up till I need to start to work on it. I'm leaving my garage empty for now until I get the doors, fenders hood and trunk done. Then it goes in my garage for refinishing.

My 65 Lark is in my neighbors garage, next to his 67 Goat. Great neighbor.

Joe,

I also enjoy your restoration's progress.  Keep us updated.  With my first GS restoration, I detailed the frame first.  Then took it to the body and paint shop.  We covered it in plastic the best that could be done (I thought).  However when the car was ready to be picked up, I was not happy with the shop.  The plastic was ripped and in disarray.  A lot of dust and overspray was all over the pristine chassis.  Took a lot of time and effort to clean up and repaint over the overspray.  A little over spray is okay but this was nasty. Therefore, on my current project (my second), I decided to have all the body and paint work done first.  Then pull the body off and work on the frame.  At this date, the rolling chassis is detailed and back together, ready to roll back under the body.  So, I would suggest doing the best job possible with bagging up your beautiful, clean frame once you get it at the body and paint shop.  Good luck.

BTW, Classic Tube made my fuel lines in stainless steel.  They had the pattern for the fuel line but not the return line.  So I sent them mine and they did a great job with them.

Your frame is a work of art. And it looks like the one I have here!!!!

If I had to move the body around, I have a spare unrestored frame in my yard that I pibked up for thr 65 Lark Vert I got. So My frame will stay home until everything is painted.

Jan thanks for the kind words. It really is a dumb back breaking passion but I can't stop!!!

As far as the vert goes, it needs a trunk pan, probably quaters or at least the whole lower sections. It does start run and drive, thats the sad part. I want to cruise it so bad!! I never had a drop top. The frame has surface rust and someone put a small flat stock of steel under the drivers side rocker.

Ha! I wish Walt. I got my fenders in etching primer. Now I have to go back over the body work and finalize them and get them in primer. Then it's onto the doors. Then the deck lid and hood. Then I finally get to start on the body.

Man oh man, it's a ton of freaking work.

NO UPDATE!!!

I hate body guys!!

So what I did was booked a soda blaster to come to my car and do it. Then I can really get it going again.

He's coming next month. Probably right after the Cecil Meet which ie the Oct 17th.

C'mon Joe! .....get to work!!(Insert 'Beat-Joe-on-the-head-with-a-paddle' smilie here!) ;D
I shouldn't talk....it's taken me all summer to get my red 66 together.
All this summers rain has made my grass and weeds, and heck, even my DRIVEWAY grow like crazy. I hate gravel driveways! :'(
But I did fire up the fresh Nail a few weeks ago. Gonna paint the inner front fenders this weekend, then I can get it on the road.

Now that we have some great smileys I can do this: :icon_biggrin:

:director: GET TO WORK JOE!!!  :whip2: :whip2: :whip2:

Joe....about soda blasting.... from what I read online you HAVE to rinse the surface with WATER after blasting to remove the residue. Wax and grease remover will not remove it! If not rinsed, you will have paint adhesion problems. Again...that's what I read.
What I would recommend is a water rinse, dry, then follow up with phosphoric acid to prevent further rust before you can get paint on it. I've used a product used Pickelex. Great stuff but expensive. It's mostly phosphoric acid, so a jug of acid from Home Depot will work as well.

Title: Re: My 65 GS Restoration Thread
Post by: Joe65SkylarkGS on September 11, 2009, 07:17:01 PM
Mark I do need a freaking list!! There's too many different thing to get done!! :headbang:

Walt I was told that not to rinse. :icon_thumright: But instead to leave the soda residue on there until I'm ready to put primer on it. He also said not to touch it with any hands! :director:! He said it will keep for a while without anyone touching it!
 :notworthy:
I will do the proper research and do what's best. I have nothing against getting it into primer right away. :BangHead:

Man oh man we have some great smileys!!!
Title: Re: My 65 GS Restoration Thread

I've heard that too... the residue from soda blasting will keep it from rusting. But you have to clean it off well before priming so the paint will adhere. Also have to sand the surface to provide some bite for the paint.... a soda blasted surface is too smooth.

For lots of other opinions, there is a great autobody forum at
www.autobodystore.com
The board moderator, Len, is in Jersey too.

Are you having the body shell blasted? It sounds like you have most of the other body parts already done.

FWIW, I sand blasted the entire interior of my silver 66, then DA sanded everything I could to smooth it out, and primer with epoxy. Did the same for the underbody. Firewall was in great shape, so it just got wet sanded and painted.
I gotta get back on that silver car.....as soon as the red one is on the road!

The 4443 is the model number for the car--if you look, that is the first 4 digits of the VIN.   In this case it mean Skylark V8 2dr. HT.

Hi guys, well doing 80 hrs a week due to Sandy and also due to my boss getting the city's emergency sewer and water main repairs, I did myself in.

Last sept I was forced out of my truck cause my body was going numb. I worked until I couldn't anymore. Turned out a disc in my neck popped out and was cutting into my spinal cord and cut it off about 95%!! The Dr's couldn't believe I was still walking!!

So Oct 1st, I had the director of JFK medical center take it out, put in a cadaver bone with a plate and screws!!!!

8 months later, today, I am still numb and have had zero re-generation on my nerve damage causing the numbness. Ugh!!! Can't hardly use my hands except my thumbs and fore fingers. Horrible situation to be in. My quality of life sucks right now. The dr tells me I will recover sooner or later. No way of knowing when. So I did myself in by not going to see a dr sooner, I bet I went numb over a years time. Saying to myself, I will feel better tomorrow. HA!!!! What an a$$ I am.

So if you guys feel off a little, get to a dr asap!!!!!!

My fault I guess, so I am selling my beloved Colorado GS, unfortunately.

Sucks I wanted to make the 50 year anniversary so bad!!

Anyone interested, let me know. The frame is done, new suspension, close ratio steering box, newly rebuilt 308 posi and disc brakes up front. Chassis done in Eastwood's Ceramic 2K satin black paint.

Body only need about 2 inches on either side of the inner rear fender wells to be re=connected to the new 1 piece trunk pan I put in.

Also put a drivers side toe pan, and replaced the trunk pan, top and bottom along with the rear speaker deck.

Then it can get primered and put back on  the new frame. Not much body work on this clean west coast car.

Very disappointed to be selling it after all I did and shipped it 2000 plus miles but hate to see it sit and waste away. It needs to be done. Bobbysbuick showed some interest so maybe his friend will want it. I know he is capable of finishing it. I seen his top shelf work, he's awesome!!

Thanks guys. I will be checking in here, sorry it's been so long but between the storm Sandy and all the emergency work I was dong 90 hrs some weeks. But now we're broke and I need to sell the car along with a crap load of speed parts. In which I have listed on V8Buick.

Sorry to hear of your situation Joe. The human body is an amazing machine. It can heal itself, but it takes time. Hoping you recover soon, hang in there. At least you're posting again.... it may be good therapy for your typing fingers, so keep posting! Take care buddy

Thanks Walt. All well wishes appreciated.

Went for another MRI last Friday and got more bad news. Turns out T6 is pushing my spinal cord to the side so bad its affecting T5&7. Plus T11 is also pushing on my cord but not as bad. May be the reason I have had zero progress in the 8 months since the neck disc removal surgery.

Amazing.

Well,  that could be good news.... if that's the reason your condition wasn't improving, at least they now know why. Time to fix you up right this time. The present may suck, but the future holds promise.

My bad, it's a 4 speed car power steering is all it had besides posi. Perfect colors imo, white with blue interior. I did finish the frame allready and it's now sporting disc brakes up front. All brand new stuff obviously.

I have the original engine but it needs rebuilding. So I did pickup a 66 model year 401 that supposedly ran, and I would have done a breakdown on it myself on the cheap. To put new bearings and seals and do a nice repaint on it. Meanwhile keeping the stock nunbers matching engine in hold.

Trans felt as smooth as butter before I took it out. I'd say clean it up, repaint and put it right in. The stock interior was crispy like a potato chip lol. Compliments of the Colorado Sun!!!

I have everything in tubs in my basement as far as all the parts like window regulators and all.

All you need is a complete interior package.

I replaced the one piece trunk pan and a toe pan on the drivers side. It only need maybe a day or two of sheet metal workers to be ready for primer. The body is on a rotisserie in my garage which would be included in the sale.

I'm into it for well over 15k the way it sits.

Open to solid offers. Like I said it's a Colorado car and very clean. The quarter panels are like new!!! Also the rockers are perfect. Every bolt came right out of this car. Not one broken or stripped bolt anywhere!!!

Well the body could be temporarily dropped on the frame for transport but I have multiple big plastic storage bins full of parts too. Would need more space to put everything itith the car ya know bro!
