What is the correct coating color for the fuel filter holder, My 65 looks like zink color, another 65 is just rusty, and someone painted my 66 black. Wondering what is correct and if 65 and 6 are the same color. Thanks

For 65 the fuel filter bracket should engine color.

Mark, thanks for the reply. Interesting my 65GS is somewhat original, and I have owned it sense 78. It appears the motor was never out of it. The bracket shows no sign of paint, but looks to be zinc. Hoping someone will reply about 66 bracket. Years ago I had several 66 GS cars but don't remember how the bracket was finished.

I thought they were unpainted, zinc plated. No paint on my 65 and at least one of my 66's.
Some items were not attached to the engine when it was painted, and added later.
The cast aluminum alternator bracket (non AC) was unpainted, and the 2 head bolts may have been too. It apparently was attached after engine was shipped to the assembly plant. Both the steel alt support brackets on my '65 were unpainted. On my 66's they were either black or red.
Fuel pump on my 65 had overspray on it, so it was attached when engine was painted. Suppose the rubber lines (and filter) could have been put on before or after painting.
I wonder if the assembly manual has any details on fuel line lengths and filters. If it does, they were likely added at the assembly plant and not at the engine plant..... and would not be painted engine color.

Did some digging. Photo is the engine on my car taken in 1993 or 94.

Sure, now you tell me the bracket should be zinc plated. I just dropped off a bunch of parts for plating today! :BangHead:
Seriously, I assume that cars came with brackets both zinc plated and painted engine color? If not, I'll think about taking my bracket off and getting it plated; can probably get it in before they run my batch. Not sure it's worth it since it's all together with the painted bracket now, though. But I'd appreciate confirmation of which is correct or "more correct".

You're probably a-ok with it painted. Seen lots of them that way.

I concur with the Zinc plating. I remember taking my Riviera engine apart and wire brushing the zinc and being disappointed with the results. (1992)
It almost looked like galvanized metal before buzzing it off with the wire wheel.
Anybody have a supply of the old a/c filters? Why are these not reproduced!!!

If it is a galvanized surface, that's nearly impossible to duplicate. I could have it plated in clear zinc, but if that's not correct, I think I'd leave it painted engine color. As Mark says, there are lots of them out there like that. So is the consensus that it should be galvanized or clear zinc?

I've done some research in some engine bay pictures that I have from various sources. And I'm seeing the bracket both painted and plated. An interesting resource is the 65 Buick brochure. In it, all of the nailhead engines appear to have the brackets painted engine color.
My conclusion: call it good either way.

More importantly, it gives us all a whole new challenge. At the bottom it reads:
A SPECIAL NOTE TO BOAT ENTHUSIASTS: Buick engines, V6 300 cubic inch and 401 cubic inch V-8 are now being adapted for marine use . . . .

I have have owned my 65GS since May 1965 when it came off the showroom floor and my bracket is original and it has never had any paint on it. However I admit paint would look fine.

Well that beats when we got hold of my trusty wagon by 2-1/2 years. We got her used in 1968. Congratulations! :icon_thumright: You are the first person that I've noticed on this forum who has owned their 1965 Gran Sport since it rolled out of the showroom.
