Title: 66 sees the light of day
Post by: GS66 on May 06, 2016, 10:41:07 PM
Got the black 66 GS out, it has not run right for some time. It is going over to Starc's place to be checked out and for troubleshooting tomorrow. Hopefully it will be driven back home, not hauled.

Thanks Chuck. Well, there she goes. I may get it back at the Verona WI show June 4th, but that might be optimistic. Since we're taking the 65 to that show it would be fun to drive both back home together.

Me likeee.

How does a 'Dans GS' plate end up on Jim's car ?
Title: Re: 66 sees the light of day
Post by: GS66 on May 07, 2016, 01:29:54 PM
We originally bought this car for my son Dan to drive and he used to drive it to work and school daily in the summer months and for just cruising so that's how that plate got on there. It's probably available in WI!

She is a beauty indeed!

Any sense of what is ailing da' patent?

Hopefully she won't require too much "surgery!"

I think it's an ignition/electrical problem. Also has a vibration in it since the rebuild. We did drive it on to the trailer though.

Great looking GS Jim!
'66 sightings are rare, even on the web. Always good to see one.
I'm itching to get to mine but the weather has been unusually wet.
Hope Stark gets those bugs worked out!

Most common, flywheel or flexplate installed wrong for the vibration.

Post by: GS66 on May 08, 2016, 09:09:31 AM
I'm afraid you're right Tom. The motor was rebuilt due to a vibration wearing on the bearings. Then they probably reassembled it the way it was which was incorrect. Where I live there doesn't seem to be any shops that understand nailheads.

Beautiful 66 Gs post car. Reminds me a lot of my dads post black 66 Gs he had back in the 80's. Bummer to here about the issues. Hope they can be fixed without to much trouble.  Here's a pic of my dads old post. (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160508/23fa8f12d36ef14e06c37c8809527c5c.jpg)

It is one of those bitter-sweet moments when you can get a rough estimate of the age of a photo by comparing it to old photos of your own.  There is something about how those early slide and print photos fade that is immediately recognizable.   I can't tell you when the picture was taken, but I'll bet it wasn't too far from the 1970s!

Jim, the wiring diagrams are in the '66 Chassis manual.
It's online on the Team Buick site. You may need to be registered/logged in to open those links.
Scroll down to the 'Buick Library, History, and Stories' section:

Update: "Dr." Starc called today and the patient is doing much better. Coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath cured! We will be able to take her for a drive next weekend when at the Verona car show. Looking forward to it. We are still waiting for some front end parts to get that area up to par but the prognosis is good!

Update: "Dr." Starc called today and the patient is doing much better. Coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath cured!

That's great news!   What was the diagnosis and what sort of treatment was used to effect a cure?

Curious minds want to know!

One of the main problems was the distributor, which was installed poorly. He also changed the intake and carb to the complete Qjet setup I had. Also a lot of amateur wiring was pulled out and redone correctly including for the switch pitch convertor. The front end will need rebuilding yet as there are some well worn parts. Also corrected issues with the kick down. It's nice to have people who know nailheads working on the car for a change.

Dear Jim and mid-60s Buick caregivers,

One of the main problems was the distributor, which was an MSD Pro Billet unit.

Interesting.  When my engine came back from TA-Performance it also had a problem that was traced to the MSD distributor.  Rich, the guy who sold me the Sportsman EFI system, explained that MSD was in chapter 11 for a while before being bought.  During those "lean years" they appear to have had some quality control issues.

He also changed the intake and carb to the complete Qjet setup I had. Also a lot of amateur wiring was pulled out and redone correctly including for the switch pitch convertor.

Indeed it sounds like da' doctor was quick to spot the problems and knew how to remedy them.

The front end will need rebuilding yet as there are some well worn parts. Also corrected issues with the kick down. It's nice to have people who know nailheads working on the car for a change.

Glad you feel that way!  It is a relief when you have someone who really knows what he is doing working on your car!

Glad to hear that da' patient is on the road to recovery!

Cheers, Edouard

We got to take the 66 for a drive Saturday at the car show, it really runs great. It has not run like that in years. The car likes the Qjet for sure. The redlines Starc put on for a stock look really chirp when the car shifts into second. Next it gets some fine tuning and some new Moog front end parts. Then it will be ready for the trip home, with a lot more power than it left with.😀

Hurray! . .  (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/yahoo.gif)  I'm always happy when a "mature" Buick starts to feel like it is 40 years younger!  :angel4:

The car likes the Qjet for sure.

If the car likes a Q-Jet, just imagine how much it/she/he would like a electronic fuel injection system!! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/car_3gears.gif)

. . . . Just an innocent suggestion . . . . . (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/innocent.gif)

Car looks great Jim!

What all has been done to it?
You mentioned a front end rebuild, Q-jet carb and intake and some ignition mods.
Which Q-jet, the '66 7026240?
Any plans to take it down the 1/4??
Title: Re: 66 sees the light of day
Post by: GS66 on September 03, 2016, 08:25:33 PM
Walt, it was the carb I bought from Johnson Brothers Racing, 1966 replacement. Yes added Qjet, rebuilt front end, alignment, brakes, changed wheels in the back, new distributor, complete tune up, cleaned out radiator, and some needed wiring. I will still eventually need to do more to the car but for now it runs very well. Just got back from a short cruise with my wife in it. The only reason it was gone so long is I had Starc working on it in his spare time between jobs to save money. May get to the strip someday but my next trip there will be with the Challenger.

Jim, that day saw me dealing with the usual heavy long weekend traffic after loading.  :angry9:  That left very little extra time to get back across the border. If you're able to visit while I'm being loaded, that would work well.  :cheers2:  :hello2:

I had to double check to ensure your number was still in my phone, since I forgot to save it when you texted me a few months ago.  :BangHead:    :icon_tongue:

I will text you the next time my travels bring to the thriving megalopolis of Mankato.  :icon_biggrin:

Jim, its unfortunate we couldn't connect yesterday when I was in Mankato.  :sad1: I was lucky to arrive at my customer before they got busy with outbound loads. Another five trucks showed up within 45 minutes of my arrival. Four had to wait for one of the two available docks.  :icon_biggrin:

Lots of water from all the monsoons you guys recently received. Some local roads in Faribault and Northfield were closed by flooding. The Cannon River was really flowing!

Nice Jim !    I remember doing donuts in the middle of intersections in my younger days .
I had a cousin do a burn out like that at the main street stop light in Cambridge Mn. when we were in our early 20s . We were totally amazed he did it because we all thought he knew that there was a STATE TROOPER sitting right behind him watching the whole thing .
( It did not end up well for him that knight )
