Title: fast blink rate
Post by: bbbbuick on April 24, 2015, 04:14:32 PM
Hello all,

My turn signals blink at a way too fast speed, like you see on the import street racer cars. Is there an obvious source of this? I thought it was due to a lamp in the right rear being slightly broken, the locking tab on one side was missing causing insufficient contact, but I replace that and the problem continues. Any help appreciated, electrical diagnosis definitely not my strong suit.

Elvin,

Electrics are not my best subject either. I thought on the old 60s stuff that if you lost a bulb it wouldn't flash at all. First thing I would check is the flasher, plugged into the fuse block. You probably won't find one at Autozone however...

Dear Elvin and mid-60s Buick electricians,

My turn signals blink at a way too fast speed, like you see on the import street racer cars. Is there an obvious source of this?

Mark beat me to it, but I've collected some additional info so here it is.

Like Mark, I suspect the flasher.  They don't last forever and the old mechanical ones change speed as they die.  They look like this:

and are plugged into a corner of the fuse box.  Here is a listing from RockAuto for replacements:

I assume you can get them at any decent auto parts store.  I suppose there is one additional caveat.  If you want to keep your car as original as possible you need to buy an electro-mechanical unit.  Otherwise you won't have the distinctive "clicking" sound of the 1965 turning signal.  If that isn't important to you, you'll save money and get better life out of an electronic unit.

Cheers, Edouard

Thanks much. It's a cheap and easy place to start.
