Title: Sprucing up my 65 GS triple white Hard Top
Post by: mdkd on January 21, 2015, 10:55:55 AM
All

Well gang it is time to start recording progress on sprucing up my 65 GS triple white Hard Top.

At  this point I don't plan to go the full restoration route just make it a little more presentable.

I will be looking to retain the stock look wherever possible except for a few period correct absolute have to haves like keeping the early Stewart Warner triple gauges and plastic cup holder hanging on my driver door panel.

Over it's last 49 1/2 years or so it has had enough fixing to no longer really consider it original but it is a numbers matching car in good condition that I really enjoy driving.

 So here we go.

Wish me luck and the fortitude to stick to my plan.

Should the under side of my 65 GS hood be painted body color or black? It is black now.

Should all the nuts and bolts on my engine block be Buick Green except the exhaust manifolds?

Should all the engine brackets be painted Buick Green?

Should the fuel pump and water pump be Buick Green? The fuel pump isn't at this time.

Should the hood latch be painted black? The one I have is black and chips to metal look gray.

Thanks

Milton

Hi Milton,

Underside of hood should be black.

Most of the nuts/bolts will be green - unless an accessory or component was added after the engine was painted (by the factory).
You'll need to reference photos on that.

Steel brackets are green; I believe aluminum brackets are bare alum.

Water pump should be green. Don't know about the fuel pump, I left mine natural.

Hood latch should be gold zinc/gold irridite.

Milt, I hope to see your car sometime and really enjoyed our phone conversation.

Milton.

How exciting! This should be a relatively easy clean up and paint for the engine compartment. I hope that the exterior paint job goes well. White is a very forgiving color. Be sure to post photos of the process.   Mark's GS is a great example of proper detailing, and he is the man to ask what's what. It should do well at the BCA Nationals. Looking forward to seeing you and the gang in Springfield this summer.

Mark, John & Jim

Thanks for the encouragement.

My first thought is to get as many detailed pictures as reasonable before I really start.

The camera is a lot better at remembering than I am.

Now where did I put that camera.

FYI All

There is a lot of good information on Engine Painting I received here on my car in Catigory "Paint" Thread "Paint My Engine".
