Didn't it snow in May up there last year?!

Not last year, but it is known to have bad weather for this show. It is an early time for MN to have an outdoor show.
We had a good time. Some beautiful cars, meeting up with some old friends , new ones and finally putting a face to ones here.

Actually it was a GREAT time with Mark providing the hospitality suite. As I drove over from Green Bay there was snow on the ground until about 10 miles from the border. For the swap meet it was a balmy 40 or so. Hot chocolate was good though.

I had a great time at the show and swap meet. But the best time was had the day before in Mark's garage. It was good to hang with old and new '65 GS friends. Mark and Melissa were great hosts with a delicious meal afterwards. I hope to be able to make this an annual trip. Rob, is your new shop ready for entertaining yet? Here's a photo from last year;

This sounds great.  We can make final plans as we get closer to the event and get a final count. The shop has pretty much everything we need .  Bathroom, fridge, grill, 1/2+ acre of outdoor parking, even some inside parking spots (4 or 5) for overnight before the show if they are needed.   Looking forward to this.

Thanks Loren for getting things started on the Extravaganza for this year it's 27th.

Our last membership meeting before the show was Tuesday night so I thought I would chime in with the latest greatest on the show put on by the Gopher State Buick Club a chapter of the BCA on Sunday May 4, 2014.

Yes, this show has had some unlucky weather from time to time but it is the first major outdoor event of the car season here and we usually run 700-900 Show Cars with additional Swap and Car Corral activity at the Minnesota State Fair Grounds.

Like last year I have included a copy of the registration form sent out to previous participants and also available at many of our local dealers and retail supporters. The DISCOUNT for participants has a postmark cut off date this year of April 15, 2014 just like TAX day.

At the gate adult Spectators pay $5.00 and Children under 12 are FREE.

We are continuing to use TOP 21 participant voting for trophies and being a BUICK show we have an additional 5 trophies for BUICK only.

Show Car parking, like last year, will be open and BUICKS will have their own designated area.

With the conversation already going on it sounds like the preparty to the party will be another unforgettable event.

Rob, how are things coming at your place? Is there anything we can help with?

For those who didn't have a chance to make it to the Mark Ascher get together last year take a look at thread "Spring Extravaganza Car Show MN State Fair Grounds Sunday May 5, 2013 and you will get a good feel for what is coming up.

You can find additional information on the Extravaganza Car Show and Swap Meet at www.gopherstatebuick.org (http://www.gopherstatebuick.org) or call the HOT LINE 651-770-8096.

If I can answer any questions don't be afraid to call  Cell sixonetwo sixfivefive 08five five.

Looking forward to seeing you all.

Milton

Really, The shop is ready to go.   Should we plan on some grilling at my place the night before?
My shop is just west of the twin cities. On highway 12.  about 25 Minutes west of the fairgrounds.

2nd Annual 65 GS Mini-Convention has a nice ring to it. Plan on driving over a GS convertible - weather willing. Let me know if I can bring anything. Grilling Saturday night sounds like a good idea. See everyone in a few weeks.

Yes, it did snow in May last year but only by Rochester. May 1st they got 13" of snow and that happens to be where  I was working that week. This year the weather will be great though!

I have requested Monday May 5th off work, so it looks like I'm now about 70% sure of making the trek. If the weather cooperates, I will drive the 4 speed car down.  At 12 mpg, it's only money, I can easily make more.  :occasion14:   :icon_biggrin:

I will make sure to have the basics such as meat to grill, something in a crock pot, something to drink.   We can fine tune it the week before when we have final numbers.

So Am I correct that we have:

Rob
Mark A
Milton
Tom (possibly)
John
Dan
Loren?
Jim? (the drive from mankato is a piece of cake)

Someone should follow up with Jay

John T or Brian are you up for a trip?

Would be great to see some more new faces.

Rob

Title: Re: Show/ Swap meet St. paul, MN
Post by: Robk on April 15, 2014, 09:20:43 PM
Hello boys

The address for my shop is 5520 West Main St, Maple Plain Minnesota.   Maple Plain is a small outer suburb/town about 10 miles west of 494 on 394/hwy 12 (394 becomes highway 12).  Stay on 12 until you are in the town of maple plain.  There is a stoplight on the east end of town and a stoplight  on the west end of town.  Take a left (south) at the light on the west end of town.  This is Halgren.   Drive 150 yards over the bridge and take the first left. This is west main.  Drive 150 yards and the shop is on the left.

For those unfamiliar with the area, the Twin Cities have a interstate loop around them which is 694 to the North and East Side and 494 on the South and West side of the twin cites.   It's basically just a large circle around the whole metro. Hwy 12/394 is at the middle of the west section of the loop.

Coming from, the north on 94 you would exit onto 494 heading south at the suburb of maple grove and drive about 10 minutes to 394.  Exit to westbound 394 which immediately becomes highway 12.  follow directions above.

Coming from the south on 35 or 169 you would get off on 494.  west on 494.  Get off on 394 westbound (which immediately becomes highway 12) and follow directions above.

From the East take 94 through the cites.  At the west end of Minneapolis get on 394 westbound.   Once you cross under 494,  394 becomes highway 12 and you just follow the directions above.

So I am presuming the get together is Saturday.   I am open.  What time should we say?  3?  4? earlier?  I'll taker whatever you guys think.

I sincerely hope that we have some newcomers jump on board this gathering.  Everyone is welcome.   I am not exaggerating when I say, based on last year's gathering at Mark's, that there is hardly a piece of knowledge that exists that is not known by this group.  There are certainly some more experts out there (whom I intend to meet in person at the 2015 BCA),  but just hanging out with these guys and listening and absorbing their conversation was extremely informative and they can answer pretty much any questions you throw at them.  So I hope everyone on this board considers themselves invited.

Isn't this how Woodstock got started?

Invite a group of very talented friends to a sleepy little town in the country and the rest is history.

Kidding aside, I would vote for it being early enough to get some daylight pictures of any GS's that happen by.

My intent is to bring my white Hardtop weather willing as Dan puts it.

The red Convertable will be in the Car Corral on Sunday.

Nice write up.

That way, I can get half way home. Hoping for good weather that weekend.  :icon_thumright:

Not sure if I can bring anything down for the feast,  as I wouldn't want to spread any botulism.  :icon_puke_r:

Let me know if I can help in any other way.

Oh yes, pretty sure I know my way around the TC area main roads.

May have some bad news about my attending.

It looks like I need to get my brown car down to Fargo, ND for shipping to PA. Tried to make it happen this weekend, alas that's not in the cards. So, I'm now looking at this Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. Not sure if my employer will give me 2 more days off, on top of the 3 previously booked for this show.  :sad1:  I need to rent an open trailer, which is tough on very short notice.

Mark, if I cannot get online here to advise the group, I'll either call or text you at the number I have.

I really want to be there.

A body nailhead Buick's at local Twin Cities Speedway and Minnesota Dragway's.

Unfortunately the land these tracks lived on became way to valuable but the memories will live with me forever.

Packed the goody bags yesterday for the show and have only one week left to wait.

Planning to leave my house at 0800 Saturday, see you guys at Rob's shop sometime that afternoon.

I've been checking NOAA weather every day this week, hoping for the best. If I remember, I'll bring down some of the best cheddar cheese you'll ever taste, courtesy of a small place about 1/2 hour south of me.

Not sure yet if I will check in at La Quinta first, or head directly to Rob's and check in later. It will likely depend on how my travel is going. Need about 3 gas stops, plus I-94 can be crazy on Saturday's. Construction also happening at Monticello.

Well we made it to the show and I was able to get pictures of some 65 GS's. I could not identify all but I did see Dan's red convertible from WI and Tom's cream yellow 4 speed car with the brown interior. We parked near his with our astro blue 66 GS. I also saw a white convertible with a red interior, the red convertible for sale (Milton?), a red convertible with a black top from MN, (J. Keena?), a black convertible (Jay). Sorry we didn't get to meet anyone, had to be back for grandsons birthday. We will be back next year and hopefully make the party too!

You all have very nice 65 Gran Sports! Maybe next year we'll be in a 65 as well. Who's were the ones I couldn't identify?

JIM

You are right, my red ext, red int, white top convertable 65 GS #99 in the 65GS Registry was in the Car Corral today.

I also had my white on white on white 65 GS Hard Top that once belonged to John Egel 65 GS Registry #31 at the get together last night and you see it in the middle of Loren's picture below.

I'm sorry we didn't have a chance to cross paths with you today but there will sure be additional opportunities this year as Loren has pointed out with the all GM show in early June and the Heartland BCA Regional here later this summer.

Keep the faith as more and more mid 60's A body Buick's are sprouting out every year.

As a side note I convinced Keith in the blue club jacket of Lorens picture to come join the fun last night and he couldn't stop talking the whole 35 miles back home.

Good food and great company. I think I can safely say we all had a fantastic time.

I want to say thanks to Rob Keena for hosting the Saturday get together. Also thanks to Mark for bringing along pictures. I think Milt had some pictures also. Not to be forgotten, all the pictures, dealer literature and the cool back drop banner that John showed up with. Thank you all for a great event.

It was a long weekend drive to the Twin Cities and back to Kansas City but well worth it. It was good to see the old gang again and meet some new '65 GS nuts. I had a great time and plan to make this an annual trip north. Thanks to Rob for hosting the pre-show gathering. I'm envious of his shop. Thanks to his wife for helping with the food. Loren brought some Nebraska corn feed T-bone steaks to compliment the grilled hamburgers and chicken breasts. Thanks to Milton and his BCA chapter for putting together a huge swap meet and car show. I rarely see so many '65 GS in the same show. Kudos to those that drove their GSs from far away places like Winnepeg and Green Bay.

Jon, regarding the banner, some of the guys at the gathering have also expressed a desire to have a banner printed for them. I will check with the shop that I had mine printed at and see if I can get a discount for printing multiple banners. If anyone else is interested, speak up now.

My trip down was going great......until 2 miles west of Clearwater, MN, when I heard the unmistakable windmill sound indicating a seized fan clutch.  :sad1: :BangHead: After confirming that, figured nothing to lose by continuing on to Rob's shop, albeit at reduced speed.

Sunday at the swap meet, I lucked out by finding not one, but two fan clutches, one of which came from a 65 Electra!! What are the odds of that?? Had plenty of *help* with the R & R while people passed on by wondering what we were doing.  :angel4: Can't thank you all enough for being there with finding dropped nuts and washers, holding parts for disassembly, and passing on your knowledge. :occasion14: :cheers2:

Barely made it to Fargo last night, and after 8+ hours of sleep, north to Winnipeg! Drove about 950 miles total, used about 1 quart of oil, haven't figured out gas yet, but should be around 14-15 mpg.

I'll post some photos later today.

Tom, glad you made it home safely. It was great meeting you and reconnecting with all the other GS guys.

Rob, thanks for hosting the get together and to your wife for the food. Definitely envious of your shop.

Great steaks Loren.

Where do you start? Hats off to Rob for hosting the "party" this year, it was a great time! It was a privilege to get together again with this group of guys. Thanks to the road warriors who drove long distances to be here, everyone got to the Twin Cities and back safe & sound. Maybe we need to start having a long distance and hard-luck award....  No rain, and a really nice day Sunday for the show. I believe I counted 5 65 GS cars in the show, and Milton's convert in the car corral for 6 total. I also counted at least 4 other 65 Skylarks. Thanks Loren for the visors! We should start thinking about where the "pre-show party" should take place in 2015.

John, I'm in for a banner.
A few more pics.

I'm in for a banner. It will be a nice wall display in the shop.

Mark,
I see you got a picture of the GS convert from St Cloud.  I think his name is Terry.
I wasn't able to find it latter. Anyone else get to see it?

If it was the white/black top/red interior I did see it and snapped a couple pictures. I may have a picture of all the 65 Gran Sports that were there.

I also have a few photos of that St Cloud car. Won't get anything posted until Tuesday now. Just as I was about to get started uploading to photobucket, Alan who bought my brown car called to say he had a transport ready to meet me in Pembina, ND Tuesday.

So, mad scramble to:
1 -  Rent trailer.
2 -  Book one more day off work (ouch).
3 -  Arrange for short term full insurance coverage.
4 -  Remember I need two more tie down straps, which I bought locally.
5 -  In between all that, on the phone to book/confirm everything.
6 -  Start the car and remove my license plates (tags), since in Manitoba, they don't go with the car.

I'm heading out in the morning to get Alan's car on its way to him. Thankfully, he's been very patient while we worked all this out.

What a day this turned out to be.  :tongue3: Got trailer picked up, car loaded and strapped down, ready for the highway at 10:35AM! Discovered that I needed to make a quick stop at Canada customs just so they could enter the VIN as exported from Canada. Then US Customs told me that the buyer is supposed to be present to sign the paperwork!!

After I advised them of my minimum three separate phone calls to their vehicle import office where I was advised this wasn't required, they processed the form, giving me specific instructions for Al to follow once he gets the car.

Then two miles to Pembina, ND where I waited, and waited, and waited some more. Transport driver called me to say he wouldn't arrive until 6:30PM!! Pembina is not a large town, more like a podunk one. :icon_biggrin:

At least a friend from work stopped by so we had the chance to chat for a while.

I will try to get some photos up alter tonight or tomorrow morning.

So I'm now down to one Buick, and it will stay that way............for now anyway. :angel4:

Look for an envelopment in the next couple of days.

To all those who have express a desire to have a GS banner printed for them, I will start a new topic in the General Discussion section. I now have a quote from the printer for printing 15 banners.

Thanks,
John
