Title: Buying new shoes for my baby
Post by: Chris on March 25, 2009, 02:20:45 AM
I went to the shop the other day to switch out the rims and tires on my convertible with a set of 14" Buick rallies (P275 14 60) that I bought as part of my post car deal.

I started looking at the tires and noticed that they weren't in the best of condition and the rims had a couple rust spots on them so I'm thinking of buying a new rim and tire package.

Can anyone help me with the following?

Anyone have any comments or experiences with the repro Rally rims / caps that are out there?

Anyone running 15" Rallies with a stock setup (suspension / brakes) without rubbing etc?  If so, what tire size are you running?  Pictures?

If the feedback is positive, I'm thinking of investing in a set of repro 15" rallies with new caps and tires.

The Parts Place has a 15" rim / cap combo for $1100 and Sams Club has a deal starting on their BF Goodwrench TA's next month.

Any help is appreciated guys,

Chris

Chris

I am running repo wheels, 15 x 8 on the rear and 15 x7 on the front.  I have the Hoskits springs which lower the car 1" all the way around.  The front will rub just a touch at full lock going down my driveway. The rear is fine.  I have 245 60's rear and 235 60" front. Tires are Redline Cooper radials.  The wheels are great, just not aware of anyone that repos the wheel centers, most reuse old centers that are re-plated.  My pictures are in the gallery.

Thanks for the response.

This is exactly the setup I'm thinking about.  Since my car will bascially set stock, I shouldn't have any issues with rubbing in the fronts.

Can you paste a link from the Gallery of your car.   ;D ;D

Will this work? Do not know how to do it the other way.

Wow! Car looks great Tom!
I'll have to look into a set of those redline Coopers!
Chris, One of my Buick buddies has a sweet 65 Skylark. He put a set of repo Wheel Vintiques 15x7's on it with 255/60-15 in the rear, and 235 BFG's up front. They fit nicely.
I've heard 275's will also fit in the rear. but one of the V8 guys said they rub sometimes on his car.

15x7's might be out of stock. Summit racing has 15x8's for $192 each. No 15x7's listed.
Repo caps are avail from Mitch Romanowski. He's been making them for years.

Can you elaborate on the BFG sale at Sams Club?

I just went back and look at my post.. I wrote BF Goodwrench.. opps.. obvioulsy I meant BF Goodrich.  LOL!

Here is a link pertaining to the sale Sam's club is holding

http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate.do?catg=12151

Saving fifty bucks off a set of four tires (plus it's local so no shipping etc) sounds good to me.

Now that I've seen those redlines on Tom's car I'm really leaning towards saving a little longer and going that route.

Tom,

I searched for redline Cooper tires and can not find them. Where did you buy yours ? Also, what is the backspacing on your wheels ? The wheels look great on your car.

Hey Dan.. you'll find this place interesting.

http://www.dbtires.com/

Red lines for big rims!

These are really cool and it's the first time I've seen them.

If the bucks were not a option, mount these on some of these rims http://wheelvintiques.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/page12.html

I imagine you'd have close to $5k in your rims and tires when you was done.

I need to find the site I was looking at before.  I think I was looking at some new 15" Firestone redline tires.

Holy Sh#$ Chris !! $600 per wheel ??!!  Sure are pretty though  ;D
I'd go with the 15's if you want that traditional look. Maybe even check out eBay for a price break and put the savings towards the redlines. The BFG redlines are about $200 each  :o

Dan

You are right, I cannot find them either.  On the inside wall of my tires it says Cooper Cobra GT Radials.  I got them about 2 years ago from a friend of mine who bought them for his 70 SS 396 and decided not to run them.  I thought he bought them from Coker Tires.  Maybe I have a one-of -kind set.

The front back spacing is 4" and the rears are 4 1/2"

I will keep working on finding them.

The wheels priced at 600.00 are billet aluminum

And here's a how-to article on making your own redlines.....that's a much better match for my budget!;D

Tom,

Thanks for the info on the backspacing. The front tires on mine were 235's but I switched to 215's to eliminate the rubbing. Better save those Coopers. They're collectors items  ::)

Hey Dan can you share the recipe for your current rim and tire set up... it looks pretty awsome!

I know you switched to disc brakes, but did you have to switch or would've your rims worked with the drums?

I plan on switching over to discs but this is a project that'll need to wait till next year and I want to do the rims and tires this year.

Thanks,

Chris

Chris - thanks for the compliment.
The car has 17" American Racing Torque Thrust II's (TT2's). The fronts are 7" with 4" backspacing while the rears are 8" with 4 3/4" backspacing. Those are both standard backspacing for those wheels so they don't have that custom pricing. The tires are 245-50 rear and 215-50 front. The rears are actually about the same diameter as my old 225-70/14's.
The drum brakes would have worked fine but I wanted the extra grab of the disc's and the dual master cylinder. I bought the whole brake setup at The Parts Place.
Just so you know, a set of 15" TT2's would run about $750 from the place I purchased mine. But then again, they don't have that nice period look of the rally wheels. They'd look great on your post car when its done though.

Anybody have a couple correct 14" rims for mine?  I have 2 or 3, need a full set.
I do not want to get dinged at the nats for the wheel modification again.

You guys probably know of Mike in Calli...well, he had this 65 for sale in Oct 2006.
Custom made wheels using Buick centers. 16 or 17" rims?  Expensive but nice!

I found this site today..

http://www.wheelsmaster.com/rt_simcar.jsp?req=newSearch&carId=82&carYear=1965&carMake=Buick&carModel=Skylark

Pretty cool!

I'm kinda checking out the Boyd and Foose wheels right now.  It looks like if you shop around right, you can buy a set of 17"s with tires for under $1800.

According to this site, you can go all the way up to a 20" (not for me)

That is tall and wide!  They guarantee it to fit on this site.

If you wouldn't mind can you tell us you rim and tire sizes with offsets?

They look really nice!

Thanks to everyone for your help.

Today I made my decison and ordered them.

We'll see what they look like in about 7 - 10 days.

I went with the polished Coy's Series A rims.  I really debated polished vs. chrome but decided the polished would look better with the white paint.  They ended up being about $75 cheaper per rim also not plated.

Rear Rims - 18" - 7" - 4.25 back space       General Tires P235 50
Front Rims - 17" - 7" - 4.25 back space      General Tires P225 50

The rear should sit about 1" higher than the front.

Bought direct from Coy's website $1450 total cost (shipping, mounting, balancing, lug nuts)

Can't wait to try on my new shoes.. pictures to follow!

Wow. Thats awsome. I went over this a few times but here it goes.

I have a 68 a body rear in my 65 lark so, I had Coy make me the best outer offset.
Being the rear is wider, he couldn't give me the correct offset inside and out so,
I ordered 4 7 in wide one piece billets and then I had the rear rims split and added 2 inches. Now I have 17x7's and 17x9's.

I'm sure you will be happy with them. Mine are 2 years old and look as good as the day i got them.

Dan,

I'll need to wait till I get them to know for sure...  :)

The whole ordering process went so quick on the phone that all I caught was the General name.

Man I can't wait to get these on my car!

Here are a couple more for ya!

Title: Re: Buying new shoes for my baby
Post by: Chris on April 24, 2009, 11:22:57 PM
A couple things stood out at me from the pictures.

1.  I need to refinish my rocker moldings.. they look really bad!

2.  I have a top pad that needs adjusted by the rear window.

3.  The front bumper needs adjusted.

4.  I really need to get my wheel moldings refinished and back on the car.

5.  My taillights need to be adjusted (left side appears a little higher).

6.  THESE RIMS REALLY SET THIS CAR ON FIRE!   ;D

I'm running about 30 psi in my air shocks and I've not heard a wheel rub yet (even with four people in the car)!

What is crazy is that the 14" rims and tires on the car before would rub all the time... I just can't figure it out.   ???

I swear that this car has attracted more compliments, stares and "thumbs up" this past week than any other car I've ever owned.  I would've never have believed that a newer set of larger rims and tires would set off a white car like this has.

Chris, I do pop by every time I get home, but I don't always post anything. Today I'm suffering from my first head cold in more than 2 years, or I would've gone and gotten my car from storage. I'm itching to drive it again, even if it isn't show ready. It'll be great to feel nailhead power under my foot once more.

I'm thinking that a pic or three of your car with the top down will have me wanting another vert really bad. ;D

Chris, sorry it took me so long long to respond but with the 80+ weather i wasn't inside much over the weekend.Anyhow, back to the rims.I'm not big on after market crap but those rims really look good on your car.Still hard to believe you tucked a rear tire that big under your car with no modifications.
