My name is Bob Slusser Im 54 My first car when I was 15 was a 4 SPEED GS.I PICKED UP THE PARTS CAR OVER THE WEEKEND.Started on the 4 speed console today and I have a Slideshow started

Hi Bob,
From one of your earlier posts, I believe that you said your frame was bent in the front horn. From what I see in the photo, your frame looks really nice and solid. You'd be amazed at how easily a good frame shop can bend your frame back to factory specs. It seems to me that it would be cheaper than replacing it with a non-numbers matching frame. Once it's been straighten, blasted and painted, it will look like new. Just my humble opinion. The body looks really straight and clean. Just make sure that it's NOT blasted with sand or it will warp the sheet metal. Photos are great, keep us updated with your progress.

John hey thanks alot .That is an option however the frame guy thats looked at it wasnt quite as optimistic.the frame and body are both bent .looks like it was hit hard in the front cowl area and the body is bent in at the bottom .the frame is out of spec almost 2 inches.I am going to have another frame guy at Carls body shop look at it next week.Carls does restores and collision work

That's alot of fantastic pictures in your "flickr" folder. Why did Buick use the Special interior panels in the post coupe GS cars? Will you be putting the vacuum gauge in the consolette or the static Buick emblem? I like the tissue dispenser, to me that says "old school". That is a tissue dispenser, correct?

That is a damb good question.I dont know why .I found good panels ,the seats are fair but no one i have found have the correct covers.I couldnt justify a tach in the console so I got the vacuum gauge .I am putting old school tach on the column and dixcos under the ash tray

What color is the interior ? If its black keep a look out for 1965 Specials for the interior pieces. No one reproduces any of the interior pieces. If its a basic color you can trying dyeing the panels and covers with SEM or similar products.

It's looking really good Bob and I think you are going to end up with one heck of a car. I'm glad that you're saving this car and there will be another very rare four speed 65 GS bad on the road.

Can you post some pics of where the frame damage is? Depending on where it is, you can cut that section out of a regular skylark/special frame and weld it into your boxed GS frame and make it a good frame again. From the firewall forward, the regular and boxed frames are identical. If you cut and tacked it together, an experienced welder could weld it up without warping it and it would be just as strong or stronger than when it was new.

I also prefer painting outdoors. You can't beat the great lighting and ventilation!
What kind of primer and paint are you using?

this is my second time to do this and i am in a money saving mode.I really like Rustoleum.I had everything media blasted and painted with KBS Rust seal first (better than por 15 IMHO) you can spray it right out of the can without thinning and a qaurt goes a long way.Than I sprayed Rustoleum with 10% acetone semi gloss .A Arms,swaybars and core support are gloss . 35 bucks for the KBS and 15 for the Rustoleum and you can touch up with spray cans.Last restore i did i used eastwood but this one looks just as good

It's amazing how clean that sheet metal is. This has been an "Ohio car" it's entire life and you just don't find virgin metal like that here. The dent in the door jamb and quarter was actually a blessing simply because this is what made the owner park it for so many years (since 1973). I can't wait to see this car back on the road and I'm so happy we was able to save another one from the crusher and Bob is reunited with "the car" from his youth.

Chris he saved the QTR after all the cutting up another car paying to have it blasted there wasnt much left of the donor QTR and he saved this one .Body work is done ready to start blocking and final touch said the car will be ready for the frame to pick up painted and buffed in 4-8 weeks

That's awesome to see that the quarter could be saved. This car is so amazingly solid and I'm really glad to see that she still has her original quarters.
Can't wait until she's done and it looks like the worst is behind you now.

Wow! Looking good! Putting your GS back together is the most fun and rewarding part of the restoration process. Enjoy and keep the photos coming. Tell me about the adapter or spacer plate that you're using for the QJET carb.

Looking really GREAT.
I know you are very carefull but be sure and check your hood height with the carb spacer.
You don't need a puptent dent in the middle of your hood like I have seen on several 65's.

The interior is from a parts car I bought and just cleaned it up .it is not perfect but it is factory.I found after buying a bunch of Repop stuff I went with oem even though it wasn't new.I am trying to use (and we will see) stock oem clutch it looked perfect only 43 k on it and car was owned by a female bought new.Stock rubber i many places,plug wires,cap,seats,door and qtr panels,armrests,radio,most all the trim
The ramps are race ramps.they are in Lieu of jack stands just feel safer .I work alone a lot and had some close calls over the years with jack stands.They are about the same height as jack stands just a 2x4 and a floor jack.also they keep the suspension in the correct spot which helps for exhaust and all the bushings.thanks guys for the comments

What a great looking 4-speed GS. You've done a fantastic job with the restoration. Kudos!!! Great video, sounds nasty. What cam did you use? BTW, you could probably use regular heater hose clamps rather than those tower clamps. Here's a photo from a '65 literature piece. You're on the home stretch, next video will be you doing a burnout.

Thanks for bringing this picture in the Red Vinyl Brochure to my attention on the heater hose clamps as they go into the firewall.
I took a lot closer look at the other pictures in the Red Vinyl Brochure I have and noticed the upper radiator hose is still a tower clamp on both the Gran Sport and Riviera Gran Sport.
Does anyone else have real BUICK documentation allowing us to use something other than tower clamps for water?

I believe that for judging purposes, tower clamps are needed for the radiator hoses. The heater hose clamps are those regular spring clamps. If you look through the Buick Chassis Manual, you can spot some illustrations of both the radiator hose tower clamps and heater hose spring clamps. Sorry, I don't know the proper name for those spring clamps. They can be bought at most hardware stores however. Later today, I'll look through the rest of my literature to see if I can find any Buick factory photos or illustrations. If I find anything, I will post it.

Those are corbin spring clamps. Usually require a special tool to install nicely but can be done with pliers if you are careful.

I have been attacked in the past by flying "corbin spring clamps". I ended up customizing a pair of pliers by grinding dimples in the plier's teeth to grab and hold those clamps.
I just found that either tower clamps or those corbin spring clamps were used and are acceptable for judging.

Great video. I just love being a witness (even on video) to seeing a 65 gran sport's nailhead come back to life for the first time in years. I have seen my own and Mark Ascher's in person, and now you captured yours on video for others to see. It never gets old for me. I wish I had filmed mine. Your car looks top notch. Well done.

Few bugs .Steering box is leaking ...need to install a recurve kit ....Quadrajet might need some more work but it is coming together.
Drove around the block a couple times and feels strong
