Title: Date codes on a Carter AFB
Post by: jmos4 on April 27, 2012, 08:09:32 PM
Hi all,

I got a rear carb for a 1965 and was wondering what the date code broke down to as this has 3 digits "AK4"

I thought the first was the month and the second was the week
though reading on line I have also see one that stated that the first was the month and the second was the year

Now what does 3 digits mean?
it is a 65 carb and not a 64 does it mean it was made in 64?

also what does the "S" or "SA" mean after the 4 digit carb number

Thanks for the info,

Jim,

The carburetor is from October (K) 1964 (4). The 'A' may be for the week but the AFB's I have seen have just had a letter and a number.
Still a carburetor for a '65.

3 digit codes are unusual.
According to Duane Heckmans date code book, A= January,  K= October and the 4= 1964.
The 3 digits confuses me.
A '64 carb would have different linkage than a '65 carb due to the switch-pitch trans used in 65-6. That would determine if it was a January or October build.

I believe the 'S' or 'SA' had to do with the manufacturer.....Carter, Weber, and Federal Mogul(?) made them over the years.... and now Edelbrock.

Went back and looked at my dual quad carburetors and both have the dual letters in the dates. Anybody know why ?

Hi,

The carb I got is a factory stick carb, I recently found on evil-bay last week, just arrived on Friday and was curious as I never saw 3 letter before either
funny thing is the guy had it listed under Super Wildcat and no mention of Buick in the description, had 3 total bids and I got lucky

If your logic and from what I have read, guessing this was made the first week of Octobor 1964, making this one early 65 carb

Thanks for the info,

Walt, If A=Jan then how does K = Oct. when K is the eleventh number in the alphabet and Oct. is the tenth month? :confused4:

Hi,

"K" is for Octobor as "I" is not used in most codes as it is easily confused for 1

Damn, just the carb I need for my 2-4 set-up.
How hard are the 3924s to come by?

Mark,

Not sure, I got really lucky, I know Brian was surprised I found one, the guy who had it on EBay was a Mopar guy, so just listed the carb number and Super Wildcat and the description was straight from Wikipedia figure it would have gone for much more

I tried to look up the amount of 4 speed Wildcats for 65, yet could not find out a break down, but guessing there were not many

Regards,

Nice find!   At one time my mission in life was to find the production ###s for 4-speed Wildcats.

Wildcats with Super Wildcat engines and 4-speeds:  107.
Wildcats with 3-sp sync 169
401/4-sp 217
425/4-sp 144
